DMV for Credit Union Democracy (DMV4CUD)

ABOUT DMV4CUD
DMV for Credit Union Democracy (DMV4CUD) is a voluntary, autonomous assembly advocating for and open to all credit union member-owners in the DC metro area. The assembly is organized and facilitated by member-owners of area credit unions, nominating candidates for Boards of Directors, and meeting regularly for consensus-based decisions on proposals for board consideration. First and foremost, we want to ensure transparency and democratic participation in our area's credit unions.
Our inaugural campaign is focused on Lafayette Federal Credit Union (LFCU). Elections for LFCU Board of Directors positions are on May 17, 2014 - if you're a LFCU member, register here to let us know you're coming.
Credit unions are nonprofit, member-owned and controlled banks that emerged to serve the needs of disinvested communities. Today, some have lost that important focus and have weakened the democratic practices that are essential to their effective operations. Credit unions offer a unique opportunity for community members to practice, experience, and observe democracy in action locally; they are stronger and more sound financial institutions as a consequence.
We aim to build on best practices already implemented at other credit unions nationwide such as: offering “green” financial products; developing innovative, non-predatory products for low income and immigrant communities; democratizing philanthropic giving; and expanding business lending to support cooperatives and other alternative ownership structures.
